New ‘.melbourne’ domains have launched
Your long-awaited “.melbourne” digital branding is now available!
.melbourne is a Top Level Domain, just like “.com.au”. It’s one of more than 100 generic Top Level Domains (or gTLDs) recently approved by ICANN, the international organisation that manages the world’s domain name system.
Other gTLDs which were recently approved by ICANN include .club, .pics, .photo, .rich, .guitars, .marketing – and even .monash for our prestigious university in Clayton!
.melbourne has been in the offiing for some time, and registrars are now accepting pre-registration from eligible organisations. To be eligible, you must:
1. Be the registrant of a corresponding .au domain name (e.g. com.au, net.au);
2. Be listed as the .au registrant of the eligible .au domain name 30 days after the limited registration period; and
3. Comply with the launch and registration eligibility requirements.
Additionally, you need to check these boxes – which should just be a formality if you already own a .com.au. The applicant must be:
> a Victorian business entity registered with ASIC and either with an address in Victoria associated with its registration, or with a valid corporate address in Victoria;
> an Australian citizen or resident with a valid Victorian address; and
> an entity associated with the State of Victoria and the domain name is an exact match, partial match, an abbreviation or an acronym of either: (a) the applicant’s registered business name, (b) a product, service, course or training program that is manufactured, sold or provided by the applicant to Victorian residents, or (c) an event or activity organized, sponsored or facilitated by the applicant in Victoria.
